Book Review: The Making of a Manager by Julie Zhuo

Last week, I read Julie Zhuo‘s “The Making of a Manager.” I picked it up partly to better understand what Facebook’s management style is like. There’s been much written on the management culture at Google, but not so much about Facebook or from the point-of-view of a product designer.

Overall, I think it’s a great read, especially for first time managers. It shares a lot of insights on how to communicate goals effectively and how best to convey and build your leadership within your team. I enjoyed Julie’s personal anecdotes on the many mistakes she’s made as a manager and how she reconciled them. We’ve all been there. Having the self-awareness and humility to acknowledge your mistakes, much less put them in a bestselling book is admirable and a signal as to how she’s become a top VP at Facebook.
